Topics in Bioscience

How does the brain allow us to think, sense, behave, and feel? In this course, we will begin by learning about the basic physical structures of the brain, such as neurons, channels, synapses, and neurotransmitters, before moving on to explore how they give rise to complex phenomena such as learning and memory, addiction, sensory processing, and mental illness. We will learn how the science of the brain has emerged through investigations and critical discussions of the most important experiments and observations of the past and recent history. Engaging morning lessons, comprising a mixture of lectures, discussion, and interactive classroom activities, will introduce students to materials from several different angles. In the afternoons, students will consolidate their knowledge with hands-on laboratory activities and exercises.
