We live in a golden age of surgical innovation. New knowledge and techniques allow us to develop and evaluate interventions at a rigor and pace unknown to past generations. New startups regularly spring out of research in university laboratories to change patient care and save lives. This course will position students at this juncture between clinical surgery and emerging technology including robotics, artificial intelligence, and synthetic biology. The students will be exposed to the scope, applications, and challenges inherent in developing new surgical tools and innovation. They will hear lectures and participate in technology-assisted surgical simulations with Stanford surgeons and scientists. Diving into real-world case studies, discussing with professionals, and touring Stanford Hospitals and research facilities, will prepare them for their final Shark Tank-style project in which they develop and pitch their own innovation.
